Chongqing General Hospital, a Profile

Chongqing General Hospital (also known as Chongqing General Hospital, Chongqing University; and Chongqing Academy of Medical Sciences) is one of the first “National Tertiary Class-A Hospitals” in Chongqing. It was officially established on March 25, 2016, following the merger of the former Chongqing Third People’s Hospital and Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital, with approval from the Chongqing Municipal Government. The hospital operates from its main campus in Liangjiang New Area, along with the Third Hospital Branch, Zhongshan Branch (Chongqing Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital), and an independent Health Management Center. In January 2022, the Chongqing Academy of Medical Sciences was established. In September 2023, it became Chongqing General Hospital, Chongqing University.

The hospital has a rich history and cultural heritage. Landmark historical buildings such as the former site of the Soviet Embassy, the Legislature, the Judiciary, and the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission of the Nationalist Government are located within the hospital grounds. Moving forward into a new era, all staff members continue to uphold the motto “Chongqing General Hospital for the People”, striving to build a top-tier comprehensive hospital and contribute to the Healthy China Initiative.

International Medical Exchange and Cooperation of Chongqing General Hospital

Hiroshima City Hospital Organization, Japan

In 1986, Chongqing, China and Hiroshima, Japan, established a sister-city relationship.

In 1989, the Chongqing Third People’s Hospital (now the Yuzhong Branch of Chongqing General Hospital) and Hiroshima City Asa Citizens Hospital were designated by the governments of both cities as the medical exchange hubs between Chongqing and Hiroshima.

In 2006, based on their solid history of cooperation, the relationship between the Chongqing Third People’s Hospital and the Hiroshima Hospital Business Bureau (comprising Hiroshima City Hiroshima Citizens Hospital, Hiroshima City Asa Citizens Hospital, Hiroshima City Funairi Citizens Hospital, Hiroshima City Rehabilitation Hospital, and the main office) was elevated to a formal collaboration.

In 2013, the Hiroshima Hospital Business Bureau was renamed the Hiroshima City Hospital Organization. In 2016, Chongqing Third People’s Hospital and Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital were merged into Chongqing General Hospital. In 2019, Chongqing General Hospital and Hiroshima City Hospital Organization renewed their Memorandum of Understanding in Hiroshima.

Voronezh City Hospital No. 8, Russia

In June 2005, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, Mr. Boris Gryzlov, Chairman of the State Duma of Russia, accompanied by Xu Jialu, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, visited the Chongqing Third People’s Hospital (now Chongqing General Hospital Yuzhong Branch) and toured the former site of the Soviet Embassy located in the hospital’s inpatient wing. Mr. Boris Gryzlov inscribed that “Chongqing Third People’s Hospital is indeed a China-Russia Friendship Hospital.”

In April 2006, Chongqing Third People’s Hospital and Voronezh City Hospital No. 8 became China-Russia Friendship Hospitals.

In May 2006, the Office of the Commission for Establishment and Staffing of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee issued approval for Chongqing Third People’s Hospital to add the designation “Chongqing China-Russia Friendship Hospital”.

In December 2006, Mr. Sergei Razov, Russian Ambassador to China, and Mr. Xie Xiaojun, Vice Mayor of Chongqing, jointly unveiled the “Chongqing China-Russia Friendship Hospital” plaque.

SingHealth Group, Singapore

In September 2023, Chongqing General Hospital signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the SingHealth Group of Singapore (including KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Changi General Hospital, National Cancer Centre Singapore, National Dental Centre Singapore, National Heart Centre Singapore, National Neuroscience Institute, SingHealth Polyclinics, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore National Eye Centre, Sengkang General Hospital, and SingHealth Community Hospitals). This agreement aims to foster practical exchanges and collaboration in hospital management, discipline development, medical research, collaborative innovation, nursing cooperation, and professional development for healthcare workers.
