Geriatrics Department

The Department of Geriatrics, established in 1952, was the first of its kind in Chongqing. It is recognized as a national key clinical specialty unit for geriatrics and is part of the National Regional Medical Center for Geriatrics. The department also serves as the Chongqing Institute for the Prevention and Treatment of Geriatric Diseases, the key discipline for geriatrics in Chongqing, the key clinical specialty in geriatric medicine, and the Chongqing Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases. It functions as a high-level talent development hub for young and mid-career medical professionals and is a public health physician training base in Chongqing. The department currently operates three inpatient wards and eight subspecialties, covering respiratory, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, rheumatology, psychiatry, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It offers 135 inpatient beds, two outpatient clinics for geriatric diseases, one psychological therapy clinic, and one outpatient clinic for rheumatology and immunology. The department integrates prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of geriatric diseases with education, public health awareness, and research activities. Its medical staff possess extensive clinical experience and advanced diagnostic and treatment skills for common diseases in older adults. The department enjoys a strong academic reputation and social influence, maintaining a leading position in geriatric medicine in Chongqing.

Over the past 70 years, the department has achieved rapid, high-quality development. It boasts a strong and diverse multidisciplinary team with rich clinical expertise in managing common internal diseases in the elderly. The department specializes in treating critically ill patients, managing pressure ulcers, handling complex comorbidities, and providing care for elderly patients with advanced age. Through its neuropsychological testing laboratory, it also offers early screening and treatment for anxiety, depression, and dementia among older adults.

The department has been honored with numerous awards, including the national titles of “Youth Professional Performance Unit”, “Women’s Model Post”, and the “Ten-Year Achievement Award for Youth Professional Performance”. At the municipal level, it has been recognized with awards such as “Women’s Model Unit”, “Star Nursing Station”, “Women’s Professional Performance Demonstration Unit”, “Worker Pioneer”, “Demonstration Ward for Quality Nursing”, “Advanced Ward for Quality Nursing”, “Top Ten Excellent Nursing Team in Mountain City”, “Outstanding Public Service Window”, and “Care Service for the Elderly”.

Academic Leader: Zhang Jie

Zhang Jie, the Director of the Department of Geriatrics, holds a Ph.D. degree and serves as a Chief Physician, Master’s Supervisor, and Postdoctoral Research Supervisor.

He is a member of the Geriatrics Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Vice Chair of the Geriatrics Specialty Committee of the Chongqing Medical Association. Additionally, he serves as Vice President of the Geriatrics Branch of the Chongqing Medical Doctor Association and heads the Chongqing Expert Panel for Geriatric Health Promotion. Zhang Jie has been a visiting scholar of the “Western Light” program under the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China at Peking Union Medical College Hospital and the Mayo Clinic in the United States. He is recognized as a high-level medical talent in Chongqing, a leading expert at the Talent Development Studio for Young and Mid-Career Professionals, and an Innovative Leading Talent under the Chongqing Talent Program. He is also recognized as an academic and technical leading talent in Chongqing and holds the honorary title of “Yuzhong Talent”. Throughout his career, Zhang Jie has received multiple awards, including “Advanced Individual in the Chongqing Health System”, “Outstanding CPC Member of the Chongqing Health Commission”, “Chongqing Good Doctor”, and “Yuzhong Good Doctor”. His primary research focuses on the immunological regulation mechanisms involved in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis associated with aging.

Hematology

Founded in the 1980s, the Department of Hematology carried out umbilical cord blood treatment of aplastic anemia in 1995, autologous stem cell transplantation in 1998, and biological cell treatment of leukemia in 2009. The department is a member of the Center for Standardized Treatment and Collaborative Innovation of Lymphoma and a member of the Chongqing Branch Center of the Chinese Expert Alliance of Hemophagocytic Syndrome.

There are 45 open beds in the department, equipped with laminar flow ward, cell separation room and traditional Chinese medicine treatment room. There are more than 20 doctors and nurses in the department, and the backbone of their business are studying hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, targeted immunotherapy for lymphoma and myeloma, and radiotherapy and chemotherapy for malignant tumors in the Hematology Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the Peking University People's Hospital and the Beijing Cancer Hospital. Academic leaders and backbones have held 30 important positions in academic organizations such as the Medical Association, the Medical Doctor Association, the Association of Integrative Medicine, the Anti-Cancer Association, the Medical Biotechnology Association and the China Health Promotion Association.

In terms of clinical diagnosis and treatment, the department has high attainments in the diagnosis and treatment of common and frequently-occurring hematological diseases such as lymphoma, myeloma, leukemia, myeloproliferative tumors, anemia and thrombocytopenia. It has developed the detection technologies of morphology (M), immunology (I), cytogenetics (C) and molecular biology (M), established the MICM diagnostic system for hematological tumors, and carried out precise targeted immunotherapy, autologous stem cell transplantation and integrative medicine diagnosis and treatment.

In terms of teaching, the department has been undertaking the clinical teaching tasks of Chongqing Medical University and Southwest Medical University, such as clinical practice and internal medicine resident training, setting up teaching reform projects and publishing teaching papers for a long time; the department has presided over and researched a number of national department-level scientific research projects, achieved invention and utility model patents, the third prize of municipal government for invention and progress, and published more than 50 SCI papers and Chinese core journal papers.

She is the 512 technical backbone of the hospital and once went to Beijing Cancer Hospital to study comprehensive cancer treatment and gene thermotherapy. She has presided over and participated in a number of national and bureau-level research projects on targeted therapy of hematological tumors, and won the national invention patent and the third prize of the municipal government for invention and progress.

She specializes in targeted immunotherapy of lymphoma, myeloma and senile leukemia; precise radiotherapy and chemotherapy of malignant tumors, including lymphoma, head and neck tumors, lung cancer and gynecological tumors; diagnosis and treatment of various anemia, leukopenia and hemorrhagic diseases.

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine


The Department of Rehabilitation Medicilitation practices inne has a history spanning over 50 years. Its core rehabiclude modern techniques such as sports therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, integrated with traditional methods like acupuncture and massage. The department is recognized for its strong comprehensive capabilities and distinctive contributions to the field, placing it at the forefront of rehabilitation services in Chongqing. The Department has 51 employees, including 14 doctors, 19 nurses, and 18 rehabilitation therapists. The medical space covers nearly 3,000 square meters, with 25 beds. The Department features a rehabilitation training hall exceeding 300 square meters, equipped with a full range of advanced rehabilitation facilities. It offers systematic rehabilitation treatments for pain, mobility, speech, and cognitive impairments resulting from various injuries, including sports injuries, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, fractures, and burns. Additionally, it provides rehabilitation for conditions such as osteoarthritis, cerebrovascular accidents, and tissue inflammation. Through standardized management and continuous innovation, the Department was recognized as a specialty department in Chongqing in 2009. It serves as the vice chairman unit of the Chongqing Society of Medical Rehabilitation, holding a prominent academic status in the field of rehabilitation medicine within Chongqing.


The department primarily treats a wide range of conditions, including:

Nervous system disorders: hemiplegia, paraplegia, quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, facial paralysis, shingles, headache, sciatica. Bone, joint, and muscle diseases: functional dysfunction after fracture surgery, osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis, periarthritis of the shoulder, lumbocrural pain, intervertebral disc herniation, stiff neck, acute lumbar sprain, soft tissue injury. Cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and respiratory conditions: cerebrovascular insufficiency, dizziness, hiccups, bronchitis. Sensory and intellectual disabilities: pharyngitis, tinnitus, deafness, myopia, fundus disease. Other conditions: chronic pain, dysmenorrhea, hemifacial spasm, temporomandibular arthritis, pelvic inflammatory disease. Treatment methods include physical therapy, exercise therapy, occupational therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, traditional rehabilitation therapy, rehabilitation engineering.

He has nearly 30 years of experience in rehabilitation education and clinical practice, with expertise in the rehabilitation of conditions such as hemiplegia, paraplegia, Parkinson's disease, peripheral nerve injuries, postoperative fractures, degenerative osteoarthritis, cervical and lumbar spondylosis, periarthritis of the shoulder, lumbar disc herniation, soft tissue injuries, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.


He has participated in three educational research and clinical rehabilitation research projects, published over 10 papers in core journals, and contributed to the compilation of rehabilitation therapy textbooks for the Ministry of Health on three occasions. He serves as vice chairman of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Professional Committee of Chongqing Medical Association, vice president of the Society of Rehabilitation Chongqing Medical Doctor Association, and standing committee member of Chongqing Rehabilitation Medicine Association.

Comprehensive Orthopedics

Comprehensive Orthopedics is one of the earliest tertiary clinical departments of orthopedics established in Southwest China. It is the Chongqing Bone Injury and Bone Disease Research Center, a key medical discipline in Chongqing, and a key clinical specialty in Chongqing. The department is currently located on the first floor of the Inpatient Department of Zhongshan Branch, with 33 open beds and a complete talent structure, and has more than 20 medical staff in total. In the 1960s, the Orthopedics Department was the first to carry out microsurgical replantation of amputated limb in Southwest China. In the 1970s, they were the first to use the Luque rod combination method to correct spinal deformities, perform surgical correction of congenital hip dislocation, and perform artificial joint replacement surgeries. They accumulated rich clinical experience and achieved good treatment results, receiving high praise from patients.

The department has advanced orthopedic diagnosis and treatment equipment and an excellent medical team. In clinical practice, it focuses on carrying out orthopedic diagnosis and treatment covering all types of diseases such as hip fractures, osteoarthritis, femoral head necrosis, sports injuries, articular tumors, lower back and leg pain, shoulder and neck pain, spinal fractures, and limb fractures in the elderly.
