History of Chongqing General Hospital
The Third Hospital Branch of Chongqing General Hospital originated from the Nationalist Government Central Hospital, which was established in 1929 and relocated to Chongqing in 1939. At that time, Chen Zhiqian, the hospital’s President, also known as the “Father of Public Health”, and his colleagues, helped establish the Chongqing University School of Medicine. In 1945, an urban outpatient clinic was set up in Xuetianwan, and in 1947, it moved to its current location at 104 Pipashan Main Street in Yuzhong District, renamed the Nationalist Government Central Hospital Chongqing Urban Branch. After 1950, it was reorganized under the Southwestern Military and Political Committee and the Southwestern Administrative Committee as a directly affiliated hospital. In 1951, it became responsible for the healthcare of senior officials of the Southwestern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and in 1954, it established the only senior official ward in Chongqing, which remained until the 1980s. In 1955, it was officially renamed Chongqing Third People’s Hospital. In 1985, it became Chongqing’s only deputy-department-level hospital. In 1991, the Chongqing Geriatric Disease Prevention and Treatment Institute was added. In 1993, it became one of Chongqing’s first tertiary Class-A hospitals. In 1997, the Chongqing Clinical Testing Center was added, followed by the Chongqing Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital in 2003 and the Chongqing China-Russia Friendship Hospital in 2006.
The Zhongshan Branch of Chongqing General Hospital originated from Yilin Hospital, established in 1935 and located on Zhongshan 1st Road in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. In 1950, it was renamed Chongqing Second People’s Hospital. In 1961, following decisions from the Central Health Work Conference, it was reorganized into the only specialized surgical hospital in China, Chongqing Surgical Hospital, and established China’s first clinical department of hepatobiliary surgery. In 1995, the Chongqing Cardiopulmonary Vascular Disease Research Center was added, followed by the Chongqing Bone and Joint Disease Research Center in 1996. In 2001, it was renamed Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital. In 2012, it merged with Chongqing Pulmonary Hospital to form Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital.
The Jiangbei Branch of Chongqing General Hospital originated from Chongqing Pulmonary Hospital, established in 1956, focusing on respiratory diseases, particularly tuberculosis. It became one of the largest hospitals for treating various pulmonary diseases in Southwest China and was the designated hospital for tuberculosis treatment in Chongqing. The hospital was previously named Jiangbei Cadre Nursing Home and was later renamed Chongqing Second Tuberculosis Hospital. In 1984, it was officially named Chongqing Pulmonary Hospital by the municipal government. In 1996, with municipal government approval, it added the designation Chongqing Twelfth People’s Hospital. In 2012, it formally merged with the former Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital to become Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital. On December 27, 2019, the Jiangbei Branch ceased operations.
